At present, two setting modes are adopted for tunnel kiln: mechanical setting and manual setting. Mechanical setting technology is mature for large‑and‑medium‑size flat‑roof tunnel kilns with high automation level. Setting pattern is highly dependent on setting machine and difficult to modify after confirmation, so it is hard to adapt to multiple product specifications. Manual setting is flexible, yet with high labor intensity and low productivity.

Raw materials for brick‑tile production vary greatly with different firing properties, hence system configurations differ for different raw materials and products. However, all tunnel kilns share the same fundamental working‑system framework, consisting of kiln ventilation system (flue‑gas exhaust, waste‑heat extraction, cold‑air supply, kiln‑bottom pressure‑balancing system), fuel combustion system, kiln‑car handling system and measurement‑control system.

The rationality of system configuration, kiln body structure and operational conditions of a tunnel kiln exert significant impacts on product quality, output, fuel consumption and service life of the kiln.
